Optimizing Wi-Fi Sensing UI for Better User Experience

The successful adoption of any new technology hinges on users comprehending and valuing its capabilities. During Cognitive’s journey in introducing Wi-Fi Sensing globally, we have undergone numerous iterations and concurrently developed several sample applications. The creation of Home Aware and Caregiver Aware was not merely a demonstration of Wi-Fi Sensing’s value but also an avenue for delivering fresh motion-sensing insights directly to users.

Our experiences have taught us that customer satisfaction is crucial for technologies like this, particularly when dealing with an intimate space such as the home. Here are some of the key considerations we’ve learned along the way:

1. Intuitive Out-of-Box Experience

An intuitive out-of-box (OOB) experience is crucial for Wi-Fi Sensing apps as it sets the tone for user satisfaction and retention. A smooth initial interaction can determine whether users feel confident and engaged with the app or frustrated and uninterested. If the first impression is positive, then users are more likely to explore and utilize the app’s features fully.

An effective Wi-Fi Sensing OOB will cover the following points in a smooth and streamlined fashion:

  • How to set up the Wi-Fi Sensing network
  • How to access key features (i.e., live or historic motion)
  • How to personalize features (i.e., customizable settings, notifications, sensitivity, etc.)
  • How to access help if they get stuck

For an effective Wi-Fi Sensing network, the initial setup must be done correctly. The OOB experience should integrate the physical and application setups seamlessly. For example, the app could guide users to plug in their Wi-Fi Sensing devices before assigning those devices to specific rooms. A logical flow in the OOB process reduces confusion and ensures users complete each step correctly. Clear, step-by-step instructions and feedback at each stage make the setup process feel effortless. The goal is to provide users with quick and hassle-free access to motion insights through their Wi-Fi Sensing system.

2. Streamline Motion Monitoring Journey

After users complete the OOB setup and can freely use their Wi-Fi Sensing app, it’s crucial that the app maximizes their ability to identify and respond efficiently to relevant information. The app should enable users to efficiently sort through alerts, allowing them to swiftly pinpoint time-sensitive and relevant ones. For example, users should be able to distinguish between a home intrusion while away and regular motion when users are at home.

Peace of mind regarding the monitored space is key. To achieve this, the app should minimize user confusion caused by unnecessary notifications. Features like pet filters and sensitivity settings can help filter out spam and ensure alerts are meaningful. Consider displaying detailed information for live and historical motion data, including duration, location, and the amount of motion being detected, to provide context for the user.

In short, be mindful that the core interaction of a Wi-Fi Sensing app is to get users quickly from a notification to the motion data screen.

3. Effective Motion Data Visualization

Imagine the end user has clicked on an alert notifying them of motion in their home. Does the destination of this alert provide the context and information the user needs effectively?

A Wi-Fi Sensing app can use a variety of different available data visualization tools to show when and where motion happens. The type of information required depends on the app’s main purpose—be it intruder detection, tracking sleep patterns, or another use case. Make sure the presented data gives actionable insights tailored to the app’s primary goal. For instance, a caregiver monitoring health needs different data from a homeowner focused on security.

Regardless of the end application, consider these common requirements:

  • Live Motion: Users need real-time motion data for immediate, actionable insights, particularly for home monitoring. Display information such as how much motion occurred, its status (e.g., is someone actively moving around or did they enter and stop?), the start time of the motion, and the room where the motion is occurring.
  • Historical Motion: Users often find value in tracking motion trends and patterns to understand habits or identify anomalies. Present a clear overview of motion within a chosen timeframe (e.g., the last 24 hours, the past three days, or a week). Allow users to drill down for more detailed views. For example, show how many minutes of motion occurred each day over a week and enable users to click on individual days for a 24-hour breakdown. For historical analysis, include data on when motion stopped, how long it lasted, and which rooms the motion transitioned through.

Motion data visualization tools are a way to tell the story of what’s happening in the user’s home. Every click, especially on alerts, should lead to clear, context-rich information for informed decisions.

4. Remember that the Technology is Novel

Given the unique nature of Wi-Fi Sensing technology, creating a user interface that simplifies its concepts is crucial. Users may struggle with understanding how Wi-Fi Sensing identifies movement or detects disruptions between devices. To address this, include key visuals in the OOB experience and support documentation. Use typical ellipse shapes for Wi-Fi Sensing coverage and short videos of people moving around and using devices in the network.

Since users prefer visuals over lengthy explanations, prioritize images or animated GIFs (as video tend to put heavy strain on apps) rather than technical descriptions. Curate information within the app but offer clear directions for those seeking detailed documentation on how the technology works. Use in-app FAQs, databases, or online resources for this purpose. Emphasizing visual aids and concise information helps users quickly grasp the technology, improving their overall experience and confidence in using the app.
