Cognitive Systems Corp., the creator of WiFi Motion, is licensing its Aura WiFi Motion software to companies developing products for the smart home, including mesh routers, voice assistants, and IoT devices. The software, which allows for advanced motion detection and provides contextual awareness, can work on any 802.11n compatible platform and can be delivered as an over-the-air upgrade, avoiding the need for additional hardware. The technology uses radio frequency, machine learning and artificial intelligence for localisation features which classify and localise motion, adding a layer of context that existing connected devices lack. The software will be licensed by WiFi vendors including Marvell and Qualcomm.

The system consists of a base station and a companion unit, placed at opposite sides of the house, and can cover an entire house since wireless signals can pass through walls. Unlike traditional camera-based systems, Aura offers privacy and does not require installation in private spaces like bedrooms or bathrooms. The system is capable of distinguishing between various types of motion, including human and pet movements. It sends alerts and can sound an alarm if it detects unfamiliar motion while the system is armed.
