Motion Detected: Deal Propels Cognitive Systems into Huge Wi-Fi Market

Waterloo-based Cognitive Systems has embedded its motion-sensing technology into Stanley Black and Decker's new home Wi-Fi router, Omni. Routers equipped with Cognitive’s software, called Aura, can turn every Wi-Fi-connected device in a home into a motion detector, as wireless signals are disturbed when something moves through them. The deal is a significant step for Cognitive, as Wi-Fi chipsets outsell light bulbs by 20%. The partnership between the two firms comes as the number of wireless devices grows and homes become smarter, requiring Wi-Fi routers to take on data applications and home security responsibilities.
